after weeks of tossing around ideas i think i have finally settled on something i can be happy with. i have been thinking a lot lately about the enormous amount of time most everyone spends on the internet these days and, in that vein, how much search engines (google, yahoo, bing, etc.) dominate our search for information, news, inspiration, etc. i know at least for me personally, there are many days in which you could easily define my interests and thought processes by a quick history search of my google search bar.
i began thinking about just how much this idea of instantaneous information search and retrieval defines people, and just how much you could tell about a person based on what they have typed into a search bar. yes, a lot of it may be completely frivolous information and a lot of cat videos. but even these things tell us a great amount about no only individual people, but our species as a whole.
so i began looking more closely at different search engines' statistics on most popular searches. if an individual can be (somewhat) defined by their personal searches, why not use the most abundant search topics in a country to try and shed light on the conscious of an entire civilization? yes, it will be absurdly broad and inaccurate. but i think it is an important question to ask and an even more important thing for people to see, if for nothing more than to allow us to think about what types of information we value as both individuals and as a species.
now for the execution:
i have known from the beginning that i wanted to communicate my idea through some sort of 2-d print design. i began thinking about the different ways to illustrate this idea. and i liked the thought of blending this very new-age type data with the images and aesthetics of a more traditional and iconic view of our human culture. that is, taking this modern technological information and combining it with something that looks more old fashioned. this line of thought immediately brought me to the iconic images of things like the nuclear family, dining table scenes, etc.
so what i want to do is create a scene out of vinyl and other found objects as sculpture. it will depict a typical family at home, perhaps eating dinner at the table. the people will be made of cut vinyl, laser cut acrylic on the wall, and their bodies will be filled with the text of the top 30 most popular searches on the internet in the past year. the dining table scene (or whatever it end up being) will be an actual table, chairs, etc. only things like their plates will be filled with acrylic cut words of the same popular searches. the idea is to see how much the average individual / family is influenced and (in some way) defined by the kinds of information our species deems most worthy of our attention and time.
